South Dakota's Data

Image of South Dakota

South Dakota is a state in the Great Plains of the north-central U.S., admitted in 1889 simultaneously with North Dakota (South Dakota became the 40th state). Pierre (pronounced “peer”) is the capital, one of the nation’s smallest state capitals by population, and Sioux Falls is the largest city. South Dakota’s land area is about 75,811 sq mi, and its population is approximately 0.92 million (2024). The state is bisected by the Missouri River: the more populous eastern half has fertile farms, while the western half includes the Black Hills and Badlands. South Dakota’s economy is based on agriculture (corn, soybeans, wheat, cattle) and tourism. The state is famous for Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills, which draws millions of visitors, as does Badlands National Park and historic Deadwood. It also has significant American Indian reservations (e.g., Pine Ridge). In recent decades, South Dakota promoted financial industries by loosening interest rate laws (many credit card banks operate from Sioux Falls). The state’s nominal GDP was about $75 billion in 2024. Culturally, South Dakota has a mix of Midwestern and Western frontier heritage. Rodeos and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally are popular events, and it was the setting for Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie series.

Understanding the BLS and Inflation in South Dakota

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is a government agency that collects and analyzes economic data across the U.S., including states like South Dakota. One of its key responsibilities is tracking inflation through the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures how the cost of everyday goods and services changes over time. Inflation can impact everything from housing prices to the cost of groceries, gas, and utilities across the area. By tracking inflation, the BLS helps people from South Dakota understand how their purchasing power is affected and provides insights for businesses and policymakers.

What This Graph Represents

This graph shows inflation trends in South Dakota using the CPI, highlighting how prices have changed over time. The x-axis represents time (months and years), while the y-axis represents price levels. If the graph moves upward, it means the cost of living is rising, which can affect everything from rent to gas prices. A flatter or downward trend suggests that inflation is stabilizing or decreasing. Keeping an eye on inflation is important for people from South Dakota when budgeting for housing, wages, and daily expenses.
